Hera and Kanan's place, Thursday evening

Hera had been arguing with a stubborn devaronian back home when she got the e-mail about the party.

She frowned and set her frustrating message exchange aside in favor of sliding her comm in front of Kanan and waiting until he had a moment. "What's this about? Halloween costumes?"

Kanan's moment didn't come immediately; he was tinkering with his lightsaber again, trying to figure out what it was that Master Kiwiiks had done to make it run so well. Tightened... that component a little more than he usually did, maybe...

He glanced up at Hera when she slid her comm in front of him, and then tilted his head.

"Oh, that? That's some kind of local holiday. Steve said something about it being a festival to remember the dead, which apparently means you have to dress up in costumes so that the dead don't cart you off or something like that." He shrugged. "Superstition, mostly, but the kitchen staff at Luke's have been going nuts about it since the start of October."

"Huh. Sounds like a big deal." She took her comm back, eyeing it thoughtfully. "So everyone dresses up? What kinds of costumes?"

"All kinds, or so I'm told," Kanan replied with a shrug. "Scary, silly, weird. It's all fair game, people don't look twice, as far as I understand it."

"Sort of like those big gatherings people were talking about?" Hera suggested. "Nobody looks twice at anything different, even on the mainland?"

"Sort of like that," Kanan agreed, "though everyone is doing it. And people don't just do a party on the day, so I imagine you get a little bit of wiggle room leading up to the date."

Sort of like how the impending feeling of bitterness and dread started to settle in a few days before Empire Day. But without the bitterness and dread parts.

"So, if there were some of us who wanted to go check out the mainland..." Hera pointed out.

So sue her, she hadn't been off the island yet! She had no idea what this planet was like.

"Now would be the best time for it," Kanan replied, giving her a little grin as he set down the two reassembled parts of his saber. "All the better if you gather a group, but even if you can't... people wouldn't think too much of a green complexion and a nice pair of lekku."

Hera was absolutely not going to smile at the fact he thought her lekku were nice. Even if it was nicer hearing it from him than from other people.

"I bet there's a few other folks around here who never get off the island that'd love the chance to. How can we find where to go? And let everybody know? I don't have a lot of local contact information myself."

"Well, there's the internet for finding out where to go," Kanan mused. "It's like a baby version of the HoloNet. It, like the planet it came from, is still pretty cute."

He was never going to drop that, no.

"And as for letting people know... we might be able to bribe a squirrel to pass it on to whoever is reading radio before the weekend. Or just put posters up around town. Is there a particular day you're thinking?"

Hera shrugged. "The weekend seems good. Fewer folks working then." Plenty of time for recovery if they got drunk.

"I think I've managed the internet thing. What would I look up, though?" She switched her comm over to the local setting she'd managed.

"Well, if you're going to get people to show up, you'll want to pick a day," Kanan noted. "Unless you were thinking we could get hotel rooms or something."

He shrugged.

"And I suppose what you look up depends on what you want to do? Shopping? Museums? What do you want to take on while you've got a free-for-all period on the mainland?"

"Saturday, then," Hera decided. "Let's do some shopping and then find one of those parties."

"Sounds good," Kanan replied, and then grinned faintly. "So, should I be dressing up, too?"

Hera grinned. "I think that'd be best." She eyed him speculatively.

Okay, now Kanan was grinning just that little bit more.

"Okay, what's that look for, then?"

"Well, I don't think you'd make a very good ithorian," Hera answered. "And you're way too hairy for a twi'lek. Maybe a slightly nontraditional devaronian?"

"I definitely don't have the cheekbones for a Devaronian," Kanan laughed, shaking his head. "Mirialan would be easy, though?"

Just paint him green and draw some stuff on his face. Job done.

"That would work," Hera agreed. "Think we can find the right paints?"

"Well, if people are dressing up... I hope so," Kanan replied, looking thoughtful. "Make-up should theoretically be easier to find at a time of year when it's just the thing everyone is doing, you'd think."

Hera grinned. "I'll see what I can find. This should be fun."
